PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

Strong content knowledge is key to good instruction. When teachers need a boost in areas of content knowledge, we are ready to make it engaging, memorable, and based in brain-research. Teacher comfort with standards, vertical alignment, and math practices are foundational to successful delivery of core instruction.

In this work together, we cover the foundational requirements needed for effective core instruction. Common sessions include:

  • Math Standards: Focusing on the three tiers of math standards: major, supporting, and additional, this professional learning session covers grade level standards and looks at vertical alignment within a school building.

  • Student Math Practices and Teacher Math Practices: An ideal session when teachers are comfortable with grade level standards is time to dive deeply into the surrounding work of student- and teacher-math practices. These necessary skills allow students to engage in the work of math while gaining confidence and making discoveries.

  • Achievement Level Descriptors (ALDs): This is a deep dive into the various levels that qualify as “meeting” on a state test. The ALDs are essential for understanding how deeply students need to be able to apply a standard.

  • Depth of Knowledge (DOK): Depth of Knowledge refers to how much work the brain is doing to solve a question. This session gives teachers practice in identifying and creating questions at various DOKs and encourages teachers to balance the DOK of questions across a unit.

  • Core Program Work: Whether it is adapting a district’s adoption or expanding the core to include more concrete and representational models, this session is typically when the ideal of the core adoption meets the reality of the classroom. Let us help your teachers feel excited about using their core tools.

  • Number Sense K-6: Number sense anchors everything that happens in the math classroom. Together, we’ll dive into what it looks like at various grade levels and how it is central to flexibility, fluency, and math ownership.

  • Pre-K to Kindergarten Bridge: This is a vital time for Pre-K and T-K teachers to engage with kindergarten standards and vertically align expectations. We play with key manipulatives and learn essential games that help prepare students for their next step.

This was a great day! I didn’t expect that talking about standards could be this engaging!
